En el s. XVI, la identidad de Malory era aún desconocida; sin embargo, hoy se asocia su identidad con la de un caballero galés que estuvo encarcelado varias veces. La muerte de Arturo (terminada 1470) fue la primera obra en prosa escrita en inglés que relatara leyendas del rey Arturo. Si bien se inspira en las novelas románticas francesas, difiere de estas en cuanto pone un mayor énfasis en la hermandad de los caballeros que en el amor cortés y en los conflictos de lealtad que destruyen el compañerismo. Ha llegado hasta nosotros sólo un manuscrito de mayor antigüedad que la de su primera impresión en 1485 por William Caxton.
